Understanding Addiction

🧠 Understanding Addiction

From Judgment to Understanding

Addiction is not a moral failure — it’s a human response to pain, trauma, and unmet needs.
At Sacramento Recovery House, Inc. (SRH), we view addiction as a complex psychological and behavioral condition that can be treated, managed, and overcome through compassion, education, and evidence-based care.

For over 60 years, SRH has helped individuals and families move from crisis to stability by addressing addiction not as the problem, but as the symptom of deeper struggles — and as the starting point for growth.

“You don’t heal people by shaming them. You heal them by helping them rediscover their power.”
Dr. B.J. Davis, Psy.D.

What Addiction Really Is

Addiction is a learned, reinforced behavior that develops when substances become a person’s main way to cope with pain or stress.
Over time, these patterns change brain function, emotional regulation, and decision-making.
Recovery is about retraining the brain, restoring self-belief, and building new ways to meet life’s needs.

Addiction often involves:

  • Repeated use despite negative consequences

  • Cravings or compulsion to use

  • Increased tolerance and withdrawal symptoms

  • Emotional dependence and shame

  • Disconnection from relationships and self-worth

Addiction thrives on isolation, fear, and hopelessness — which is why connection and understanding are the antidote.

The Psychology of Addiction

At SRH, we use science-backed approaches like:

  • Cognitive Behavioral Therapy (CBT): helping individuals recognize and change distorted thinking patterns.

  • Choice Theory & REBT: teaching personal responsibility and emotional regulation.

  • Motivational Interviewing: helping clients rediscover the “why” behind their desire to change.

  • Trauma-Informed Care: understanding the connection between past trauma and present coping behaviors.

These models recognize that addiction is not who you are — it’s a behavior pattern that can be replaced with healthier, self-directed choices.

Why People Use

Most people who develop addictions are not seeking pleasure — they are seeking relief.
Relief from pain, fear, shame, loneliness, or trauma.
Substances often become temporary solutions that seem to work — until they stop working and take over.

Dr. Davis often explains this using Choice Theory:

“People choose what helps them feel better in the moment.
Recovery begins when they learn new ways to feel better — without destroying themselves in the process.”

Breaking the Stigma

For too long, addiction has been misunderstood as weakness or moral defect.
That stigma prevents people from seeking help and isolates families in silence.
At SRH, we fight stigma by telling the truth:

  • Addiction is treatable.

  • Relapse is not failure.

  • Recovery is possible for everyone.

  • Healing happens through choice, not control.

When we treat addiction with empathy and knowledge, people start to believe in their own capacity to change.

The Role of Family

Addiction affects entire families, not just the individual.
We help families understand that their support matters, but control and blame do not.
Through education, boundaries, and communication, families can become part of the recovery solution — not part of the pain cycle.

Recovery Is Possible

Every person has the power to change when given the tools, trust, and support to do so.

A Message from Dr. B.J. Davis

“The truth is, people don’t recover because someone told them to — they recover because they begin to believe they can.
Once they understand that, the real work — and the real healing — begins.”
